Program and Community Outcomes

The Research Innovations using Sensor Technology in Environmental Justice Communities, or RISE Communities program is committed to establishing a community of practice, including sharing findings, presentations, and publications from the research of program participants. This page will be dedicated to sharing those findings, in addition to evaluation of the RISE Communities program.

RISE Communities Team Project in the Press!

One of the first cohort teams in the RISE Communities program was concerned about a facility situated proximal to a residential area in the community. Read more about the team is reaching the community to make an impact in part by using skills and air quality monitors from their RISE Communities training!

August 2023 Program Training Year 1

We hosted our first training cohort in August 2023 with five local research teams from Cincinnati OH, Newport KY, Louisville KY, and Dayton/Springfield OH. Each team included an academic partner and a community partner. We distributed PurpleAir sensors to each of the five teams to deploy in their home communities. Evaluation data demonstrate increased confidence in participants with regard to program training objectives and high levels of satisfaction with the training program so far. We are actively recruiting our second cohort for August 2024.

“This is an excellent training workshop that helps you connect not only with your partner but with other teams. The size was perfect for building connections. The topics were wide-ranging and highly relevant. The workshop was so well-organized. I am so thrilled to be taking part!”

“I was really impressed by the program.  It was very organized and flowed nicely.  I liked the opportunity to spend time with other community teams and hear their stories.  It was time well spent for me and I have gained confidence in my ability to lead a citizen scientist community project. ”

“This program presents a unique opportunity for community organizations to form relationships with academic partners to study and influence change in air quality in low-income communities. There was lots of good information presented in the training and getting access to these sensors will make a difference in the community.”
